Windows Media Encoder Studio Edition Beta 1
Windows Media Encoder Studio Edition Beta 1 is an exciting new additionto the Windows Media tools family. It is a powerful tool for videoprofessionals, optimized for the creation of high-quality offlineencoding using Microsoft’s implementation of the VC-1 video standard(WMV9). Windows Media Encoder Studio Edition Beta 1 provides the keyfeatures necessary to create next-generation video content andcapitalize on the growing importance of scenarios around optical mediaand video-on-demand. With the final standardization of VC-1, “StudioEdition”, will prove to be an invaluable tool for the offline encodingcommunity.

FEATURES

WindowsMedia Encoder Studio Edition includes the following capabilities, eachcrucial to the creation of the highest quality content:

1.Segment-based re-encoding

Thisallows the content editor to adjust settings for specific segments ofan encoded file, then re-encode only that segment. This capabilityapplies to scenarios where the content editor attempts one or more“passes” at a given piece of content (content creators often use one ormore passes to analyze the content, then subsequent passes to actuallyencode). This makes it possible to optimize the quality of each segmentof a given clip, creating the highest possible quality even for clipswith dramatically different attributes from one segment to the next.

2.Full-bit-depth support

WindowsMedia Encoder Studio Edition can seamlessly make the transition from10-bit to 8-bit without introducing artifacts or contouring. Byutilizing both random dither and error diffusion, Windows Media EncoderStudio Edition enables content creators to capture at full bit depthwithout resorting to truncating or rounding any of the bits. This makesit possible to encode to 8-bit without sacrificing quality.

3.Hardware acceleration

StudioEdition can be used in conjunction with hardware optimized for VC-1video acceleration. This improves workflow and reduces encoding time.

4.ISAN & Ad-ID support

StudioEdition includes support for ISAN and Ad-ID metadata. These aremetadata systems that help the audio/video industry create anidentifier for any given piece of content, similar to what the ISBNstandard for book publishing. ISAN relates to works with movingpictures, or parts directly related to works with moving pictures (suchas a full audio track of a feature film). Ad-ID relates to all forms ofadvertising regardless of medium, and is an extension of the ISCIsystem. It overlaps ISAN for some audiovisual works, but is constrainedin practice to advertising works. Each is widely used and StudioEdition makes it easy to include any ISAN or Ad-ID numbers associatedwith a given piece of content. As such, Studio Edition improves currentworkflow scenarios by supporting standards that make it easier to findand learn more about any given piece of audiovisual content.

5.Support for multiple audio tracks

6.Encoding from multiple audio and video sources

7.Graphical bitstream analyzer

This feature is an important step in verifying the quality of any selected clip.
